Highlights from the Oberhausen Film Festival International Competition, 2019
Los Angeles Filmforum at the Egyptian presents
Highlights from the Oberhausen Film Festival  International Competition, 2019
Sunday, January 19, 2019, 7:30 pm
At the Spielberg Theatre at the Egyptian, 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles CA 90028

This program brings together some of the most interesting works from the 2019 International Competition of the Oberhausen Film Festival, one of the worlds leading short and experimental film festivals.  At the start, Rubén Guzmán, with great dignity, accompanies a Patagonia woman on her forays through a region that she seems to inhabit completely on her own.  In the unusual animated film Ugahnut ivot (Imbued Life), an animal taxidermist finds rolls of undeveloped films in each of the animals she is preparing.  The music thriller ZOMBIES by Baloji looks at the emotional and social costs of social media while at the same time celebrating the pulsating sub-culture of Kinshasa in gorgeous images.  In the work by Max Philipp Schmid, two men and a woman, overwhelmed by the flood of information via media, find stability in the sort of piano playing once cultivated by the educated middle class and in Far Eastern self-optimization techniques.  And ALGO-RHYTHM, by Manu Luksch, is a hip-hop comedy aimed at automatized propaganda, which was filmed in Dakar using photogrammetric techniques.  In sum, the entire intellectual wealth of current international film production is there to be discovered in this program.

In the course of six decades, the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen has developed into one of the most highly acclaimed cultural events worldwide  a place where renowned figures like Agnès Varda, Martin Scorsese, Alexander Kluge and Werner Herzog first showed their films. Oberhausen is the worlds oldest short film festival and in the meantime also enjoys an excellent standing in the art scene, where short films and videos play an increasingly important role today. Prominent visual artists including Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Christian Boltanski and Pipilotti Rist presented their first films in Oberhausen. The festival has long spanned the worlds of film and art, of tradition and avant-garde as well with its unique film archive and non-commercial film distribution. The holdings are augmented year after year in order to make outstanding short films available to cinemas and alternative venues beyond the dates of the festival.
