Donizettis comedy of domestic drama across 2 generations. This high point of the opera buffa tradition refers to many of the stock characters of the commedia dellarte. Pasquale as the blustery Pantelone, Ernesto as the lovesick Pierrot, Maltesta as the scheming Scapino and Norina as a wily Columbina.
Premiering at La Scala in 1843 Don Pasquale was immediately recognized as Donezettis comic masterpiece.
