It seems a long time ago now, but on May 17, 2017, then Attorney General Jeff Sessions, in the presence of others, informed President Trump that a special counsel had been appointed to investigate the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, and matters that arose from that investigation.  At the time, one well-known reaction of President Trump was My presidency is over.

On March 22, 2019, Robert S. Mueller III, Special Counsel, appointed to investigate Russias Interference in the 2016 presidential election, and any obstruction of that investigation by the President, submitted his report to the Attorney General.

One of President Trumps reactions was total exoneration.

On July 24, 2019, Mueller was called to testify before Congress about the report.  On the next day, July 25, President Trump made a phone call to President Zelensky of Ukraine that caused the House of Representatives to begin a process that may lead to the President's impeachment.

What did the President learn or not learn about what was in the Mueller Report? What did the Mueller Report say; what did it not say, and does it matter anymore?  This class will explore those questions, as well as the foundational nature and organization of the report and relevant legal principles to assist learners to place the Report in context.

Before becoming a high school, AP Government law teacher and principal, Howard Gillingham was an adjunct law professor at Loyola University, teaching Death Penalty Law. He was a criminal trial and appellate lawyer for 22 years, in 1994 arguing a death penalty case in the United States and California Supreme Courts. He is the former Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Michigan.
