Immanuel: A Christmas Evening with Melanie Penn supported by the Arcadian WIld
2016 brought the loneliest Christmas I ever experienced. Ill spare you the details, but I found myself alone in my New York City apartment that year, Christmas Eve coming fast, and I wondered - What now?
During those cold December days I began writing songs. Christmas songs! One afternoon I unexpectedly wrote a song from the perspective of one of the wise men who journeys to Bethlehem. I called the song Follow the Star and sang it at a show in New York City.
Then more songs from the Christmas story poured out. The perspectives were all in the first-person, about the angels and people who were there at Christs birth: a shepherd, the angel chorus, Gabriel, Isaiah, Joseph, Mary, the innkeeper, others. And an album came to life.
These songs are about the first ones to hear the Good News. They saw signs, had dreams, heard from angels, watched the stars, and they sang.
I never planned to make a Christmas album. The songs came as surprise gifts to me during a lonely time, and reminded me of Christs hope and peace. Now, the songs connect me to you! No matter what your circumstances are this Christmas - lonely or not - may you know the miracle of a person called Immanuel, God with us.
Merry Christmas, Mel
