River people need to get together, especially during the winter. What better opportunity than at the Mississippi River Water Trail Association's January event where you and your friends can meet other paddlers and learn from some great river experts?
This year, the social starts at 1 p.m. followed by these speakers: first, world-class adventurer Janet Moreland followed by MR-340 director and co-founder Scott Mansker and then Missouri History Museum Curator of Environmental Life David Lobbig.
One Woman, The Great Rivers By Janet Moreland
Janet is a mother and a professional middle school educator for the Columbia Public Schools. Her first long-distance paddle was the Missouri River source to sea in 2013. That would be 3800 miles solo ending in the Gulf of Mexico which earned her the Canoe and Kayaks Spirit of Adventure Award in 2014. Then she did the Mississippi in 2016. She completed her solo trilogy with the Yukon in 2017. Janet promotes stewardship of our waterways and wants appreciation of our rivers to be a part of each of us: deep-seated, fulfilling, and a source of joy.
Bringing the Big Rivers to the Masses by Scott Mansker
Scott is a father of 3 and co-founder of the Missouri River 340. He was a high school teacher for 27 years, most of that working with court involved youth and their families. Scott has a love of rivers and the journeys they invite. You can bet he is planning his next long boat trip down the river to some warm, gulf coastal port.
The Eternal River and Impermanence by David Lobbig
David is the Missouri History Museum Curator of Environmental Life. Regional environmental history and natural resource use are Davids concentration for interpretation and care of the Missouri Historical Societys collections. The interaction between resource exploitation and the biotic community inform his mission to engage the public with a greater understanding of sustainability. Through exhibitions and artifacts, his work shares how historic and present-day decisions relate to dynamic environmental change.
