Think & Drink: Traditional Culture, Modern Tech
Think & Drink events are hosted conversations at pubs and tasting rooms on provocative topics and new ideas.

For millennia, traditional knowledge and culture were passed down through family, friends, and communities. But the internet has changed everything: the mass-mediated, open access nature of digital media like Instagram challenge notions of tradition, community, and privacy.

What happens to culture when the internet interveneswhen the need for family or friends to share knowledge can be replaced by watching a YouTube video or reading a Wikipedia page? How can we protect traditional culture from online exploitation and appropriation? And conversely, how can we use technology to preserve traditions and build community?

Join us for a Think & Drink event that explores the collision of modern technology with the histories, experiences, and ideas of cultural groups that are often positioned on the margins of society. Featuring Aaron Whitefoot, member of the Yakama Nation and YouTube Creator; Kimberly Christen, professor at WSU; and Russell Hugo, professor at the UW.

In partnership with the Center for Washington Cultural Traditions and the Yakima Valley Community Foundation.

Founded in 1973, Humanities Washington is the state's flagship non-profit for public humanities programming and an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
