Pippin
An Extraordinary Rite of Passage: Pippin Onstage
Presented by a troupe of traveling performers in the form of a fractured fairy tale, "Pippin" is the story of one young man's journey to become extraordinary. The story has an improvisational feel to it and juxtaposes scenes of great comedy and high energy with stripped down, raw vulnerability and reflection.
Heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks to find his place in the universe through glories of the battlefield, romance and relationship, and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father, King Charlemagne the Great). Ultimately, however, young Pippin finds that happiness lies not in extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the intrinsic and beautiful simplicity of love and companionship.
It is no surprise that Pippin currently is in resurgence on Broadway, commented longtime MMS performing arts director Sampad Kachuck. Although the play is certainly a product of the free-thinking younger generations of the early seventies, the themes still clearly resonate. The brilliance of this innovative musical is that within the glitz and flash, the journey concerns the existential and spiritual search for a true meaning in life.
A rich performing arts tradition and integrated arts curriculum make MMS performances outstanding. Put aside any stereotypes of what "high school play" might bring to mind think quality, great costumes, staging, musical talents and dramatic accomplishment. These actors work hard and it shows!
The productions musical score ranges from ballad to 70s fun, and as the opening son decrees, Join Us, the show promises to be quite a thrilling ride!
Pippin book by Roger O. Hirson, music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. Originally produced on the Broadway stage by Stuart Ostrow.
