In celebration of Native American Heritage Month!
Drew Shuptar-Rayvis, locally well-known living historian of Algonkian life, will run a family friendly living history program, Scouts and Soldiers - Native Americans in the Colonial Wars
Learn about Native Americans and their crucial involvement in the colonial wars of the 18th century. Explore a Native American soldiers campsite with living historian of Algonkian life, Drew Shuptar-Rayvis. View 18th century Native American artifacts, learn about Native American survival techniques and discover the Native American tradition of wampum belt making. There will also be a live musket demonstration. Drop in anytime between 1:30pm 3:30pm to discover Native American life.
The Norwalk Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Net proceeds benefit the Norwalk Historical Society's education and cultural programs.
About Drew Shuptar-Rayvis
Drew Shuptar-Rayvis is an Living Historian and traditional Algonkian artist of mixed European and Native American descent. Drew is a recognized descendant of the Pocomoke Indian Nation of Maryland, being of Accomac (Across the Water People) and Pocomoke (Dark Water People) descent as well as being an enrolled tribal member in Schaghticoke First Nation of Dutchess County NY. He holds a certificate in Archaeology from Norwalk Community College and a Bachelors in Anthropology / Sociology from Western Connecticut State University. Drew is also a locally well-known living historian of Algonkian life in New England and the Northeast during the 17th and 18th century; a time when Native people including his own family in Maryland were changing their ancestral ways and trying to maintain who they were through the strife, warfare and removal from their homelands as well as a time when his European ancestors were adjusting and learning how to live in a new land. Drew has interpreted for a multitude of institutions: Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, Mohegan Tribal Nation, Fort Ticonderoga, Fort William Henry, Fort Delaware, Fort Crown Point, Danbury Historical Society, Old Woodbury Historical Society, York Pennsylvania Historical Society, The Benton Homestead, The Dennison Homestead , Keeler Tavern, Hansdell House , Nanticoke Jamboree and White Plains Historical Society . Drew has also starred in a small film Washingtons Armour to be released in 2020 and is a Algonkian cultural and historical consultant and actor for the King Phillips War era film Rumors of War ; Drew has also been a reoccurring model for historical artist Don Troiani.
Refund Policy:
All ticket purchases are non-refundable, except when the event is cancelled or rescheduled by the Norwalk Historical Society. No credit or refund is available if you do not show up; or if you leave an event early for any reason. No refund will be available if you attend a program and are dissatisfied with its presentation or content.
Cancellations and Schedule Changes:
The Norwalk Historical Society reserves the right to cancel or reschedule an event due to low enrollment, presenter illness, or other circumstances. If the event is cancelled, participants will receive a full refund of their registration fee. If the event is rescheduled, participants will have the option of attending the rescheduled event or receiving a full refund.
