SPEAKER:
California Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins
BIO: Elected to the state Senate in 2016 after serving as Speaker of the California State Assembly, Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins represents the 39th District, including the cities of San Diego, Coronado, Del Mar and Solana Beach. She served on the San Diego City Council from 2000 to 2008 and the state Assembly from 2010 to 2016.
As Speaker, she was the driving force behind the state's first Earned Income Tax Credit, a proven poverty-reduction tool benefiting millions of Californians, and oversaw passage of a landmark $7.5-billion water bond. In the Senate, she passed SB 2, creating a permanent source of funding for affordable housing.
Toni Atkins is a coalition builder who believes that sound government policies can affect people's lives in positive ways. In addition to being a leading voice for affordable housing, she is a powerful advocate for women, the LGBTQ community, military veterans, and people experiencing homelessness.
She lives in the South Park/Golden Hill community of San Diego with her spouse, Jennifer LeSar, and their dog, Joey.
