Mentoring LGBTQ Youth: Creating Programs to Better Serve All Young People in our Care
This full-day session takes a closer look at researcher- and practitioner- suggested practices to create safer and more affirming programs for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. Starting with awareness and empathy building activities, participants in this full-day session will gain tools, practice, and policy guidance to become better advocates to LGBTQ youth in their care. Program staff will also be given a roadmap for how to intentionally update recruitment, screening, matching, training, case management, and closure activities using guidance from the newly released LGBTQ Youth Supplement to the Elements of Effective Practice.

By the end of this session, participants will:
Increase awareness of the experiences of LGBTQ youth in their program
Identify program strengths and areas for improvement to better serve LGBTQ youth in their community
Understand key policies and guidance from the LGBTQ Youth Supplement to the Elements of Effective Practice.
Please Note that additional support, coaching, and technical assistance will be available to all participants that attend this training. Mentor Washington programs that participate fully in this day-long training, complete follow up calls/virtual check-ins on a quarterly basis, and demonstrate updates to policies are eligible to receive certification as a safe and affirming mentoring program.
