OSCAR visits WALT, a new musical play, premiered in mid-June, in partnership with Whitman at 200: Art and Democracy. A three-performance revival will occur on the Penn Campus, October 25, 26 and 27.
Oscar Wilde spent 1882 lecturing in cities and towns across the United States and Canada. During that year Wilde, 27, paid two visits to Walt Whitman at his home in Camden. He had idolized Whitman since childhood, when his mother read Leaves of Grass aloud. Walt was a frail and feisty 62 when Oscar knocked on his door. It's well known that the poets differed in their priorities, politics and poetics, but speculation about what occurred during those private hours is widely debated. At last, in song, dialogue and, of course, poetry, "OSCAR visits WALT" reveals the awkward, volatile and loving truths of these meetings.
