WSU Cultivating Success - Sustainable Small Farming and Ranching Course

Learn how to apply successful whole farm management principles to develop your small farm operation through this first course in the Cultivating Success series. Evaluate your farms current or future resources, develop marketing strategies and explore vegetable, flower or livestock production. Course presenters include successful local producers and agricultural specialists with expertise in supporting small farm businesses. Topics will include; Concepts in sustainability, whole farm planning, resource evaluation, ecological soil management, integrated pest management and more. Participants will develop a whole farm plan as part of the final project.

This course will be offered through in-class activities, guest lectures, and two additional field days. Course fee is $260 per farm (up to 3 participants). Offered in collaboration with Skagit Valley College SAGE Program ENVAG 270. Community participants will receive WSU Continuing Education Credits.

Course facilitators:
Kate Smith, WSU Northwest Small and Latino Farm Educator, organizes bilingual workshops and courses, provides simultaneous Spanish interpretation and translation, and provides individual technical assistance to farmers starting their businesses. Before working at WSU, Smith supported farms as a farmers market manager in Seattle and as a Sustainable Agriculture Peace Corps Volunteer in Panama.

Kate Seymour, WSU Skagit County Research and Outreach Coordinator, has a degree in Business and Psychology from Albion College. She has spent the past six years immersed in the Skagit County small business food and agriculture. Her experiences range from working as farm manager at small organic farms to produce manager at local retail stores.

All instructors are well connected to the local farm network and are enthusiastic about supporting small farms to succeed.
