Conflict is an English anarcho-punk band originally based in South London and formed in 1981, with Colin Jerwood remaining their lead vocalist to this day.
Their first release was the EP "The House That Man Built" on Crass Records. Their first album, It's Time to See Who's Who, was on Corpus Christi Records, and after that, Conflict set up its own Mortarhate Records label, which put out releases by other artists.
In 1983, Steve Ignorant, who was at the time a member of Crass, guested on the band's pro-animal rights single "To A Nation of Animal Lovers". After the dissolution of Crass, Ignorant later became second vocalist for Conflict on a semi-permanent basis.
The band has always been outspoken regarding issues such as anarchism, animal rights, the anti-war movement and in their support for the organisation Class War. Jerwood was an original member of the Animal Liberation Front shortly after its creation.
Conflict's "The Ungovernable Force" album is considered by most to be their coming of age, entering the UK indie charts straight at #1 and remaining there for weeks on end, even holding off The Smiths' "The Queen Is Dead."
Conflict have been cited by many as the worlds foremost activist anarchist punk band. The stance taken is to dismiss all politics, rejecting any parties and any organisations that are linked. Conflict hold a unique and fascinating position of being hugely influential in the anarchist movement, inspiring tens of thousands worldwide. Their calls to direct action have been met by activists in great numbers throughout the years. Conflict remain active on all fronts to date.
