What The Moon Pulls
Continuing the year-long celebration of its 10th anniversary, RE|dance group presents What The Moon Pulls, a new dance work created by Executive Director Lucy Riner.

Lucy Vurusic-Riners What the Moon Pulls is an exploration of the connection between the moons cycles and its inherent hold on human emotions. The evening length work for eight dancers is performed in the round, giving each audience member a unique vantage point. Using space as a metaphor for each of the phases of the moon, the work investigates the relationship between our moon and the oceans and the parallels that exist in all human relationships. The work considers how our own behavioral patterns are impacted by the moons phases and our zodiac houses.
About RE|dance group
Creative partners, Lucy Riner and Michael Estanich, established RE | Dance Group in 2009 as a means to explore long distance collaborations. They are dedicated to the presentation of dance theatre works that examine the many facets of personal, intimate human relationships. The instability and uncertainty of charged relationships act as symbols for living in a volatile, contemporary world. We ground our artistic philosophy in creative exchange, seeking to expand our voices as contemporary artists. We (along with a growing number of collaborators) enjoy an open process where all ideas are shared, investigated, and then crafted into dances that embody a heightened physical experience rich with emotional content and dramatic imagery. Our work reflects a rigorous inquiry into the body's capability for expression through motion and movementfrom the subtle to the immense. The winding path from imagined concept to physical reality to audience experience intrigues us and grounds our process. The creative process is an ever evolving dynamic between intention, honesty, intuition and play.
Though we call Chicago home base for RE | Dance Group, the partnership rests on a unique long distance collaboration. Estanich lives in Stevens Point, WI, while Riner is a Chicago based independent artist. We became fascinated with the idea of creating work in a new waygenerating movement material while we were together and developing characters or deepening our personal understanding of ideas while we were apart. Through conversation and dialogue, we establish physical memories that enrich our dancing and the relationships created in the works.
Ethereal lighting by Sarah Lackner evokes images of celestial beings and the tides of the ocean while an original music score by Mark Burns is blended with other contemporary ambient and electronic artists. The lighting and sound design contribute to creating an environment that symbolizes the push and pull of opposing forces.
Individualized lunar chart solos by each of the dancers helps seamlessly connect the longer sections of this 60-minute dance work; allowing us to question the moons influence on each of our own personal beings.
