Searching for Seaweed Beach Walk

Join the Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee (MRC) and wild edible and medicinal plants specialist Nancy Slick for a fun walk on the beach next to the Marrowstone Point Lighthouse in Fort Flagler State Park.

The beach is a fascinating and fun place to explore! On this exploratory walk you will learn about different kinds of seaweeds and shoreline plants (how they grow, which ones are edible and medicinal uses) as well as agates, some common marine critters, and how to identify different kinds of shells you might find on the beach. Youll also learn a bit about seaweed harvesting regulations and guidelines. We will not be harvesting seaweeds on this walk, though, so a shellfish/seaweed license is not required.

Nancy Slick has been a consultant for the National Geographic television network and has been a plant instructor for local environmental education programs, including Peninsula College, Kitsap County Parks Dept, Port Townsend Food Co-op and others.

This program is appropriate for anyone over 15 years old. Sponsored by Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee, with funding support from the Northwest Straits Marine Conservation Initiative and the Puget Sound Partnership.
