This new course covers three more Hitchcock movies as well as a biographical movie entitled The Girl.

Sir Alfred Hitchcock KBE (1899  1980) was an English film director and producer, widely regarded as one of the most influential film-makers in the history of cinema. He directed 53 feature films in a career spanning six decades. He didn't have a blonde in every picture, but most of the films for which he is most remembered have one in the forefront. His blondes are as beautiful as they are mysterious and contradictory, helping shape the pictures into masterpieces of suspense. Grace Kelly, Kim Novak, Eva Marie Saint, Janet Leigh and Tippi Hedren are among his most memorable blondes.

North by Northwest is a 1959 American thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason. North by Northwest is a tale of mistaken identity, with an innocent man pursued across the United States by agents of a mysterious organization trying to prevent him from blocking their plan to smuggle out microfilm that contains government secrets. This is one of several Hitchcock films that features a music score by Bernard Herrmann. It is listed among the greatest films of all time.

The Girl is a 2012 British television film that stars Sienna Miller as Tippi Hedren and Toby Jones as Alfred Hitchcock. It is based on Donald Spoto's 2009 book, Spellbound by Beauty: Alfred Hitchcock and His Leading Ladies, which discusses the English film director Hitchcock and the women who played leading roles in his films. The Girl's title was inspired by Hitchcock's alleged nickname for Hedren. The film depicts Hitchcock's alleged obsession with Hedren, the American model and actress he brought from relative obscurity to star in his 1963 film The Birds. Hitchcock becomes infatuated with his leading lady; when she rebuffs his advances, he subjects her to a series of traumatic experiences during the filming of The Birds. Hitchcock's obsession with Hedren continues when she stars in his next production, Marnie. Hedren grows increasingly uncomfortable with his attentions, and decides that she needs to escape the situation. However, she cannot work elsewhere because of her exclusive contract with Hitchcock; this almost ends her Hollywood career.

The Birds is a 1963 horror-thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, loosely based on the 1952 story of the same name by Daphne du Maurier. It focuses on a series of sudden, unexplained violent bird attacks on the people of Bodega Bay, California over the course of a few days. The film stars Rod Taylor and Tippi Hedren, in her screen debut. In 2016, The Birds was selected for preservation in its National Film Registry.

Marnie is a 1964 American psychological thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The screenplay was based on the 1961 novel by Winston Graham. The film stars Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery. The music was composed by Bernard Herrmann. Marnie is about a young woman who makes a living by embezzling from her employers, moving on, and changing her identity. She is finally caught in the act by one of her employers, a young widower named Mark Rutland, who blackmails her into marriage. Two shocking events near the end of the story send the troubled woman to the brink of suicide and she eventually must face the trauma from her past which is the root cause of her behavior.

Each session will consist of a 30-minute commentary and discussion followed by a 2.5-hr video for each of the movies. You will receive a 38-page syllabus including bios, synopses and commentary.

John Frey is a retired Chemistry professor and a member of the boards of LLCC, OperaSLO, the SLO Master Chorale and of Opera Lovers Meet.
