n 2009, Kathy D. Harrison wrote The Movement - An A Cappella Musical for her company, Diversity Youth Theater. For over 10 years, Diversity Youth Theater developed works highlighting untold historical stories and underrepresented voices from a youth perspective.  Diversity Youth Theater was previously a resident theater company of Newark Symphony Hall, and eventually formed a residency partnership with Luna Stage Theater.  Diversity Youth Theater was presented with a City Proclamation by Senator Cory Booker, for the companys contribution to youth programming in Newark, NJ.

The Movement is now a featured work through LEAP, an arts education non-profit organization based in New York, NY. Artists LIVE! is a performance collective comprised of Teaching Artists who are a part of LEAP. LEAP Artists LIVE! provides touring performances of original works with high educational content featuring social justice themes.  In 2019, LEAP Artists LIVE! produced The Movement - An A Capella Musical as a part of the In-School Performances series.

The Movement is an historical piece that is inspired by the Childrens Crusade of 1963. This narrative musical is told through the lens of children and teens. It gives a firsthand account of how thousands of young people in Birmingham were trained to peacefully protest the oppressive Jim Crow segregation laws.

This full-length show features 1 hour 45 minutes of hand clapping, foot stomping, soul stirring original music that will surely lift your spirits. The talented cast uses their voices to reflect the gospel protest songs that served as the soundtrack of the Civil Rights Era. These catchy melodies will surely linger in your head for weeks after you leave the theater.

This musical honors the legacy of the contributions of young children during an unsettling time in American History.  The Movement was a part of the 2015 National Black Theater Festival.  In February 2019, The Movement won Best Musical , Best Diretor, Best Choreographer and Best Vocalist in the New York Theater Festival. The Movement features a book, original music, and lyrics by Kathy D. Harrison, who also directed the production.
