New Visions, New Voices - A Dance Showcase with Afro-Beat Dance Jam Afterparty
The Lula Washington Dance Theatre proudly presents the New Visions, New Voices dance showcase Saturday, June 29th @ 8PM at the LWDT Studio Theatre, 3773 Crenshaw Blvd., LA, CA 90016. Esie Mensah - from Ghana and the West Indies, by way of Toronto, Canada, is a guest artist partnering with Lula Washington to create a night of innovative and provocative choreography. She has had the honor to share the stage with heavy hitters like: Drake, Janelle Monae and Rihanna, and now she is bringing her talents to LWDT. Inspired by the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, Mensah is setting her work "We are One" featuring students from the LWDT school. She will also show a coming of age story, "ZAYO", based on her transformative matriculation from Ghana, Trinidad, Canada to Hollywood with the help of her ancestors.
The showcase will also present Lula Washingtons own work in progress, "Fragments", a reaction to the chaotic and frankly dire times were in today. Tamica Washington-Miller will share an excerpt from "Transportation Dances" which culminated her eighteen-month residency in Anchorage, Alaska. LWDT alumni and company members will also present their own original works. Company choreographers include: Bernard Brown, Micah Moch, Michael Tomlin III, Joniece Boykins, and Christopher Frazier. An after-party Afro-Beat Dance Jam follows immediately after the showcase, featuring live music by drummer Universe X and his Apostles of Funk band.
Limited space is available for the Dance Jam. Snacks and drinks will be provided at both events; and parking is available on a first come first serve basis. Those who purchase the $25 showcase tickets get into the Dance Jam free of charge. The Dance Jam Session sold separately is $15.
