Slow Food Columbus and Bob and Rachel Stern Invite you to a Farm Picnic on a City Rooftop Terrace featuring Ralph and Sheila Schlatter of Canal Junction Farm, who will briefly present the history of their farm and its award-winning status!

Hosted on the rooftop terrace of Slow Food members Bob and Rachel Stern, we are proud to invite you for an evening of hors d'oeuvres and a light dinner featuring the seasonal products of Canal Junction Farm. Weather permitting, this event will be held outdoors overlooking downtown Columbus. Space is extremely limited with a total capacity set at 20 guests. As such, we encourage you to reserve your spot today!
Proposed Menu:
*Selection of Canal Junction Cheeses and Summer Sausage
*Canal Junction Brisket, Brats, Chicken Wings
*Sauerkraut
*Herbed Potato Salad
*Tomatoes with Basil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar
*Fruit Cobbler, (preferably peach if locally in season) whipped cream
Tickets for this dinner are $20 per person; all proceeds in excess of out of pocket expenses will be donated to Slow Food Columbus, with a minimum of $5 per person going to our local chapter. Canal Junction Farm will donate all of its products used for the evenings dinner. Please note that guests are asked to bring a beverage of their choice.
In the event of rain, the event will be held inside.

Slow Food Columbus offers an opportunity in a small group setting to meet and informally talk with the owners of Canal Junction Farm, which is located near Defiance, OH. In Columbus, we know Canal Junction for its award-winning cheeses, but the farm represents so much more in regard to sustainable, natural farming.
Ralph and Sheila Schlatter, owners of Canal Junction Farm describe their farm as a grass-based, diversified livestock farm located in Northwest Ohio, along the Junction of the historic Miami Erie and Wabash Erie Canals. On their farm, they produce and direct market grass-fed beef, pork, chicken, lamb, turkeys, brown eggs, and raw milk cheeses. The operation is an environmentally friendly, family owned and operated small farm.
Over a quarter of a century ago, Canal Junction made a change: it started building fences, planting grasses and clovers, and then turned the animals out to graze, transitioning the farm to a grass-based model. This helped to revitalize and save the familys farm, which was homesteaded in the early 1850s, making this 5th generation farmer hopeful for a legacy to pass on in agriculture; thus saving a family operation, which has allowed the 6th and 7th generations to maintain a working landscape and continue the legacy.
Realizing that grass-grazing cattle was something unique in Ohio in the 90s led to direct marketing Canal Junctions meat. In the early 2000s the Schlatters started researching how to direct market dairy, and cheese was the most viable option. Their son, Brian, who spent time working at Gubbeen Farm in West Cork, Ireland, inspired the creation of a cheese unique to Canal Junction. Named Charloe, the cheese earned the American Cheese Guild Award in 2013.
Canal Junction Farm direct markets its products through website ordering and personal delivery to areas in Northwest Ohio including Findlay, Perrysburg and Toledo. Hopefully, Canal Junction Farm will extend their delivery range to Columbus in future years!
