JIM KWESKIN with PAUL RISHELL & ANNIE RAINES
Jug Band legend Jim Kweskin will perform a concert of toe-tapping tunes at the Luckart Gallery in Auburndale on Saturday, June 22 at 8 PM. Veteran country blues musicians Paul Rishell & Annie Raines will open the show.
This is the sixth concert in a series presented by Rishell & Raines at the intimate Luckart Gallery in collaboration with neighboring Bocca Bella Café and Bistro. A light fare menu and full bar service will be available during the concert. A full dinner menu is available next door at the restaurant. (Dinner reservations are strongly suggested as restaurant seating is limited).
The Luckart Gallery and Bocca Bella are located at 442 Lexington Street in Auburndale center. There is abundant parking in the lot across the street. Wheelchair access is unfortunately limited. Jim Kweskin is the founder of the legendary 1960s Jim Kweskin Jug Band with Fritz Richmond, Geoff Muldaur, Maria Muldaur, Mel Lyman and Bruno Wolfe. During the five years they were together, they successfully transformed the sounds of pre-World War II rural music into a springboard for their good-humored performances. Their imitators were legion, including a San Francisco jug band that became the Grateful Dead, a Los Angeles jug band that became the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and a New York jug band that became the Lovin' Spoonful. No other group attained their unique blend of youthful energy and antiquarian expertise, tight musicianship, loose camaraderie, and infectious swing.
These days Jim is best known as a singer and bandleader, but he also created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Mississippi John Hurt and Pink Anderson to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. He has maintained a remarkably consistent musical vision since his jug band days, continuing to explore traditional folk and blues with the sophisticated sensibility of a jazz musician, and jazz with the communal simplicity of a folk artist. He has recorded many solo ventures, as a member of the U and I band, with band-mate Geoff Muldaur, with Samoa Wilson, with The Texas Sheiks as well as performing and recording with a wide variety of well-known musicians such as Maria Muldaur, John Sebastian, David Grisman, Cindy Cashdollar, Happy Traum, Meredith Axelrod, Juli Crockett and Samoa Wilson, to name a few.
Jim Kweskin's shows radiate charm, humor, sophistication and talent. Jim sings a collection of familiar songs by Benny Goodman, Johnny Mercer, the Sons of the Pioneers, Fats Waller, and Somethin' Smith & the Redheads. There's an endearing sense of good humor to Kweskin's interpretations that makes his performances a delight. Because of his vast repertoire and love of the music, Kweskin is recognized as one of the best interpreters of the great American songbook.
Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1950, Paul Rishells early musical experience was as a drummer playing rock 'n' roll and surf music. At the age of 13, captivated by a recording of Son House singing County Farm Blues, Rishell began a lifelong study of country blues and its progenitors. He moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts in the early 1970s and began to perform with and learn from blues greats such as Son House, Johnny Shines, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, Howlin Wolf, John Lee Hooker, and Buddy Guy and Junior Wells. He soon became a well-known blues artist in his own right headlining Boston-area clubs and opening for his musical heroes.
Annie Raines was born in 1969 in Newton, MA. She picked up the blues harp at 17 and made her stage debut at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge a few months before her high school graduation. Enthralled by the recordings of Muddy Waters, Little Walter Jacobs, Big Walter Horton and Sonny Boy Williamson, she became a fixture at Boston area blues jams and played the New England club circuit with local bands. She traveled to Chicago where she met and played with many of her musical idols including Pinetop Perkins, Louis Myers, and James Cotton. She was a featured soloist in the Cambridge Harmonica Orchestra and enjoyed yearlong stints with the Tarbox Ramblers and the Susan Tedeschi Band, going on to perform on Susans first three albums.
Paul Rishell's first album for Tone-Cool Records, Blues on a Holiday (1990) received critical acclaim and launched his career as a recording artist. He met Annie Raines while working on his second CD, Swear to Tell the Truth (1993). Her work on the project heralded the beginning of a productive musical partnership: Paul and Annie have been a steadfast touring and recording team for 25 years, working as an acoustic and electric duo, as well as with a full band, gaining an ever greater following in the U.S. and overseas, recording 6 albums together including the W.C. Handy Award-winning Moving to the Country (2000).
They continue to perform Blues, American roots music and their own compositions at festivals, concert halls, and clubs all over the world. Together they have performed and recorded with John Sebastian, Susan Tedeschi, Pinetop Perkins and Rory Block. They have opened for Ray Charles, Dr. John, and Little Feat, and performed on international radio and TV shows including Late Night with Conan O'Brien and A Prairie Home Companion. They are both currently serving as Visiting Artists in the American Roots Music Program at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
