BCMC Panel: Addressing Conflict, Reducing Incarceration
Baltimore Community Mediation Center
Baltimore, MD
Compartir este evento

To cap off our 2019 Community Day, we are hosting a panel discussion about how transforming social conflict can be a tool for reducing incarceration.

Mass incarceration is one of our most dire social problems - it destroys lives and disrupts communities without meaningfully addressing the underlying causes of crime and violence. Finding effective ways to reduce the use of prisons and create community-based, non-coercive alternatives is urgent.

For years, BCMC has worked to reduce incarceration both by providing non-violent and non-coercive ways to reduce conflict and by helping individuals who are incarcerated make plans with their families and support networks through our re-entry mediation program. Community Mediation Maryland Executive Director and State Delegate Lorig Charkoudian, and Director of Re-Entry Programs Jerri Thomas will talk about the history and practice of re-entry mediation. They will be joined by one of our committed re-entry mediation volunteers, and an individual who was formerly incarcerated and experienced re-entry mediation as a participant. In addition, Safe Streets-Woodbourne Site Director Lisa Jones will talk about the way Safe Streets can interrupt violence before it starts and help people involved in violence move away from it.

Light refreshments will be served, and the panel will be followed by a Q&A and a reception to continue the conversation.
