Have you ever wondered where your glass bottles, metal cans, and newspapers go when they are picked up by sanitation trucks? You could be wearing them right now. They could be at your grandchild's school playground, in your home theater system or on your family's deck. While they look like ordinary cans, newspapers and bottles when they leave your recycling bin, recyclable products have a long journey and many uses to fulfill once your part of the process is done.

How are recyclables sorted, and what are they used for? What do you do with used batteries, light bulbs, old TVs and cell phones?  What about food scraps -- are they recyclable?

This class will include a review of what items can be recycled, an overview of the process followed when those items leave your curb, and a description of the state-of-the-art equipment used by the SLO County Integrated Waste Management Authority.  This class will leave you inspired to renew your efforts at keeping household waste out of the landfill!

Mike di Milo is the education program coordinator for the San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Management Authority (IWMA).  This is Mikes 22nd year of providing education programs. Mike and his staff deliver over 900 recycling presentations and field trips each year to children and adults throughout our county. Mike graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, with a degree in Natural Resources Management, and has lived in San Luis Obispo since 1978.
