Art of Adaptation Festival 2013
City Lit Theater presents the sixth edition of The Art of Adaptation, its annual juried festival of world premiere adaptations of non-dramatic material, July 19-21, at its home at 1020 West Bryn Mawr Avenue. As in previous years, the adaptor of the piece deemed best in show will be awarded a $500 cash prize by City Lit.
This year's selections are inspired by a wide array of material, including work written by Richard Matheson, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Edgar Allan Poe, and J.M. Barrie. The eight adaptations to be performed are as follows:
Peter and Wendy by James Matthew Barrie, adapted by Aaron Henrickson and Lane Flores
Of Mice and Minotaurs, based on Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and the myth of the Minotaur, adapted by Dan Jackson
Reasonable Terms from the collection of short stories, Animal Crackers by Hannah Tinti, adapted by Marianne Kallen, music by Karena Mendoza
Musicians of the Sun by Gerald McDermott, adapted by Rebecca Grossman
Button Button by Richard Matheson, adapted by Joseph Stearns
Miss Moore's Senior Drama Class Presents Their Annual "Tribute to American Poetry" Pre-Thanksgiving Recital, 1963, from Second April, a collection by Edna St. Vincent Millay and the November 22, 1963 edition of LIFE Magazine, adapted by Mark Mason
The Savage Passengers, from James Freeman Clarke's "Junius Brutus Booth, the Elder, an Incident in His Life" from Memorial and Biographical Skethes (1878), adapted by Bret Angelos
For Annie by Edgar Allan Poe, adapted by Nick Cardiff
Each adaptation will be performed twice during the festival. On Friday, July 19th, at 8:00 PM, Of Minotaurs and Men; Miss Moore's Senior Drama Class Presents Their Annual "Tribute to American Poetry" Pre-Thanksgiving Recital, 1963; For Annie; and Musicians of the Sun will perform without intermission. On Saturday, July 20th, at 8:00 PM, Peter and Wendy; The Savage Passengers; Button Button; and Reasonable Terms will perform without intermission. On Sunday, July 21st, at 3:00 PM, all eight adaptations will be presented, with a 15-minute intermission, in a marathon performance. A panel of three judges will attend the Sunday performance and choose the winning adaptation. The adaptor of that piece will then be presented with the $500 cash prize.
Judges for The Art of Adaptation include Christina Calvit, a Lifeline Theatre artistic ensemble member; Paul Edwards, who just won a Jeff award for best new adaptation at City Lit and past winner Robert Tobin.
Ticket prices for The Art of Adaptation are $10 on Friday and Saturday, July 8 and 9, and $15 for the marathon on Sunday, July 10. Tickets can be reserved by going to www.citylit.org or by calling (773) 293-3682.
City Lit receives funding from the Alphawood Foundation, the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs CityArts program, the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Its outreach program is funded in part by A.R.T. League.
City Lit specializes in literate theatre, including stage adaptations of literary material.
It is located in the historic Edgewater Presbyterian Church building at 1020 West Bryn Mawr Avenue, one block west of Sheridan Road and a block and a half east of the Bryn Mawr Red Line L stop. The 84 Peterson bus, the 147 Lake Shore Express bus and the 151 Sheridan bus all stop within a few steps of City Lit. Valet parking is available for theatre customers for Friday and Saturday performances, as is a limited amount of free lot parking. Patrons should call the theatre for details about parking options.
