Guys and Dolls
Guys and Dolls, originally produced in 1950, has been called "the greatest of all American musicals" by Time Magazine. The lush score by Frank Loesser includes well-known standards such as Luck Be A Lady, A Bushel and A Peck, I'll Know, and I've Never Been in Love Before. And it's funny, funny, funny from beginning to end!
It's also a problematic show in its depiction of gender stereotypes that were fully embraced at the time of its creation but, by today's standards, raise troubling questions about how women and men view and treat each other. The central conflict pits Salvation Army Sergeant Sarah Brown against Sky Masterson, well-known high rolling gambler (played by Marlon Brando in the 1955 film). It's a battle of wits and wills as Sky persuades Miss Sarah to have dinner with him in exchange for 12 sinners he promises to deliver to her mission for a prayer meeting. Sky approaches Sarah on a bet from Nathan Detroit, who runs the oldest established floating crap game in New York during his 14-year engagement to Miss Adelaide, a popular entertainer, much to her dismay. The end brings - no surprise for a musical comedy - wedding bells, and a handful of seemingly converted gamblers into the mission. There isn't a show quite like it in the Broadway canon, and our cast of 33 upper school students is laughing out loud at rehearsals!
LCA's production shows off the talents of seniors Harley Rusk and Katie Norman as Miss Sarah and Miss Adelaide, and juniors Caleb Hong and Kevin Moody as Sky and Nathan. Also featured are Carlie LaFauci, Sam Bahou, and PJ Griffiths as a gambling trio, Nicely-Nicely Johnson, Benny, and Rusty Charlie, with Dan Gattineri as Big Jule. Choreography is by senior Natalie Cist, and the usual suspects from our arts division faculty are at the collaborative helm. Performances take place May 16, 17 & 18 at 7 p.m. with a full orchestra, and tickets go on sale mid-April.
GUYS AND DOLLS is presented through special arrangement with Musical Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com
