Young Peoples Symphony Orchestra (YPSO) continues its 82nd season with the Spring Concert that will feature music director/conductor David Ramadanoff, who is celebrating his 30th season with YPSO, and 83 young musicians in a program of Beethovens Leonore Overture No. 3, Elgars Cello Concerto, Isabelle Brown-Lyden, soloist, Griegs Piano Concerto, Devun Amoranto, soloist, and the world premiere of Jeremy Cavaterras Ascent to the Sierras, a YPSO-commissioned work.
Brown-Lyden will perform the first movement of Elgars Cello Concerto. Debuted in 1919, it was the last major work the composer completed. A dramatic solo theme opens the famous work and reappears throughout the piece. Elgar composed it in wake of World War Is utter devastation and during the final months of his wife Alices life.
Pianist Devun Amoranto will perform the third movement of Griegs Piano Concerto. Norwegian composer and pianist Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) wrote the Piano Concerto in A Minor---one of his most enduring and popular works--- in 1868 when he was 25 years old. It blends Norwegian folk melodies, Griegs wonderful lyricism and virtuosic writing for the piano. During Griegs lifetime, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Liszt all praised the younger composers work, and it was popular wherever it was played.
The final work on the program will be the World Premiere of YPSO Composer in Residence Jeremy Cavaterras Ascent to the Sierras. The work is the final installment of Cavaterras Alta California cycle of symphonic tone-pictures inspired by the scenery and historic background of California, which began with Monterey Suite in 2012. Commissioned by The Young Peoples Symphony Orchestra, this new work utilizes the full forces of the orchestra, scored for triple woodwinds, full brass, percussion, celesta, two harps, and a large string section.
Cavaterra has established himself as a very busy composer and pianist in the United States and abroad. Born in New York City in 1971 and educated at Manhattan School of Music, Cavaterra was Composer-in-Residence for The Salastina Society in Los Angeles from 20102018. Since 2018, he has been Composer-in-Residence for The Young Peoples Symphony Orchestra. Cavaterras work spans the range of ensembles from solo instrumental, vocal and choral, chamber, and symphonic orchestral works. He has been recently commissioned to write a cello concerto for Robert DeMaine, principal cellist of The Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Celebrating his 30th season as Music Director/Conductor in 2018-19, David Ramadanoff conducts 83 YPSO young musicians who range in age from 12 to 18, and hail from 31 Bay Area cities in seven counties. Its been amazing to see how the orchestra has grown, not just in the size, but in the level of playing. They get better each year. So, for me, its a challenge to get better right along with them. I love that challenge, remarked Ramadannoff about his anniversary.
Founded in Berkeley in 1936, YPSO is the oldest youth orchestra in California and the second oldest in the nation. The 2018-19 season is the 82nd season since violinist and conductor Jessica Marcelli founded YSPO at the suggestion of Clarabelle Bell, an amateur harpist and Berkeley resident, who got the idea after hearing a youth orchestra on a trip to Portland, Oregon.
