"Night of the Living Dead" screening with live music by The Andrew Alden Ensemble
"Night of the Living Dead" screening with an original score performed live by The Andrew Alden Ensemble.  Bring lawn blankets and chairs; the rain location is The Sanctuary for Independent Media, 3361 6th Avenue (at 101st Street).

"Night of the Living Dead" is a 1968 black-and-white American independent horror film directed by George A. Romero, starring Duane Jones, Judith O'Dea and Karl Hardman.

It premiered on October 1, 1968, and was completed on a $114,000 budget. The film became a financial success, grossing $12 million domestically and $18 million internationally.

"Night of the Living Dead" was heavily criticized at its release owing to explicit content, but eventually garnered critical acclaim and has been selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry as a film deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant."

The film has entered the public domain due to an error by the distributor.

The story follows characters Ben (Duane Jones), Barbra (Judith O'Dea), and five others trapped in a rural farmhouse in Pennsylvania which is attacked by unnamed "living dead" monsters which later became known in popular culture as zombies. "Night of the Living Dead" was the basis of five subsequent Living Dead films (19782010) also directed by Romero, and has inspired remakes.

The Andrew Alden Ensemble is a contemporary chamber music group from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Their goal is to bring forth new music for chamber music and film. The ensemble produces textual scores for film and performs them in front of a live audience to transform the picture with new sounds and experiences.

Their music combines the influence of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, David Lang, Radiohead, Velvet Underground and Krzysvtof Penderecki to create a beautiful and haunting sound that cannot be mistaken for anyone else.

They have produced and performed scores of the following films:

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Nosferatu (1922)

Phantom of the Opera (1925)

The Lost World (1925)

Battleship Potemkin (1925)
