Turning the Crank: Crankie Art from Past To Present
Erkki Huhtamo, Professor of Media Archeology, UCLA, and author of Illusions in Motion, will talk about 19th century moving panoramas. The moving panorama (the predecessor of the crankie) was a long painting that unscrolled behind a "window" by means of a mechanical cranking system. They were accompanied by a lecture, music and sometimes special effects. Prof. Huhtamo's research has uncovered unbelievable stories about this forgotten part of our history that he will share. Prepare to be amazed!

Followed by crankie performances by Dejah Leger with Louis Leger

There's a beautiful state between sleep and wake, when even dust settles down and life slows for just a few minutes. That's where Dejah Léger performs, with a multitude of traditional children's songs and tales in both French and English. Accompanied by her Acadian father, Louis Léger, Dejah's crankies showcase a mastery of paper-cutting techniques that bring beloved songs to life.
