RE|Dance Group's A 1/4" Below the Surface of the Earth
In RE|Dance Group's "A 1/4" Below The Surface of the Earth", choreographer Michael Estanich continues to be fascinated by dancing within sculptural landscapes. An installation of wind chimes floating in the space amidst circulating air creates physical barriers for the dancers to navigate. The dancers perform complex, high-speed movement patterns with precision and abandon while also testing their stamina, balance, and interior calm. Ultimately the work is about physicality and how the dancers control an ever changing space. The dancers' motion past and collisions with the chimes creates an additional layer to the aural soundscape that heightens the physical urgency of the work. The energy of the dance and its title implies that just below the surface there is an unseen, changing, or shifting balance between the stable and unstable and serenity and eruption, like tectonic plates shifting below the surface or the beginnings of a volcanic explosion.

The new work is commissioned by the City of Chicago's Cultural Center Presents Performance Series.
RE|Dance Group is supported by a grant from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and an individual artist grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. RE|Dance Group is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization and a member of Pentacle's Back Office Chicago program.

RE|Dance Group Biography:
Creative partners, Lucy Riner and Michael Estanich, established RE | Dance Group in 2009 as means to explore long distance collaborations. They are dedicated to the presentation of dance theatre works that examine the many facets of personal, intimate human relationships. The instability and uncertainty of charged relationships act as symbols for living in a volatile, contemporary world. We ground our artistic philosophy in creative exchange, seeking to expand our voices as contemporary artists. We (along with a growing number of collaborators) enjoy an open process where all ideas are shared, investigated, and then crafted into dances that embody a heightened physical experience rich with emotional content and dramatic imagery. Our work reflects a rigorous inquiry into the body's capability for expression through motion and movementfrom the subtle to the immense. The winding path from imagined concept to physical reality to audience experience intrigues us and grounds our process. The creative process is an ever evolving dynamic between intention, honesty, intuition and play.
