The Grit and Wit of Women
The Grit and Whit of Women, presented by the Every Thursday Women's Group at Mt Vernon Unitarian Church, will be held on Sunday, April 14 at 3PM in the church Chapel. The program will feature Pat Wirth, Executive Director of the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association, and Elaine Flynn, Our Town Topics.
Ms Wirth will be discussing the history of the Suffragist Movement and the importance of honoring, memorializing and educating future generations about the suffragists who fought for and won the right to vote for American women. Her organization is raising awareness and funds to create a memorial that will reflect the strength of these women and the significance of their struggle. In partnership with NOVA Parks, the memorial will be located footsteps from where women were imprisoned at the storied Occoquan Workhouse in southern Fairfax County.
In costume and in verse, Elaine Flynn will bring to life the historic figure of Dorothy Parker, known as the wittiest woman of the 1920's. Learn about Dorothys escapades in New York, in Hollywood, and as she travels in Europe, spending time at the home that inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald to write The Great Gatsby. Youll hear excerpts of her stories and poems, and magazine articles from Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. Her accomplishments include writing the screenplay for "A Star is Born." Once you get to know (or renew your acquaintance of) Dorothy Parker you will see why she was considered a legend in her own time.
Attendees are encouraged to wear Suffrage attire, hats and pearls. In keeping with the times, tea and cookies will be served at Intermission. Tickets are $25 per person, and the proceeds will benefit the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial and Mt Vernon Unitarian Church.
