KZYX & Roots and All Live! host a Singer Songwriter Celebration
KZYX and Roots & All Live! is proud to support the Singer-songwriter tradition with a Singer Songwriter Celebration, on March 16, 2019, 7:00pm, at the Caspar Community Center in Caspar, CA. Four outstanding artists will weave their story-songs into a tapestry of lives lived. Angie Heimann, of the Blushin Roulettes and The Appalucians, Jay Brown, of the Lazybirds, Shantavaani, and The Appalucians, Michael McNevin, six time winner of the West Coast Songwriters Association Song of the Year, and Gwyneyth Moreland, member of the The Mendocino Quartet, Foxglove, and her new collaboration Marine Layer, will take the stage and share their stories for their only Mendocino coast performance.
"Singer-songwriter" is a popular music artist who writes and performs their own material, which is often self-accompanied generally on acoustic guitar or piano. Singer-songwriters' lyrics are often personal but veiled by elaborate metaphors and vague imagery. Such an artist performs the roles of composer, lyricist, vocalist, and sometimes instrumentalist. On the subject of the Singer-Songwriter, writer and lecturer on popular media Larry David Smith wrote, Because it merged the roles of composer, writer, and singer, the popularity of the singer-songwriter reintroduced the medieval troubadour tradition of "songs with public personalities"
Angie Heimann, front woman of the Mendocino County, band The Blushin Roulettes, and more recent member of newly formed North Carolina band The Appalucians, Angie is a prolific songwriter who pens earthy, old-time tunes with a modern twist. "Her songs are stripped down, sexy little jewel boxes stuffed with ancient mountain magic," says the San Francisco Free Folk Festival. Angie belts her stirring songs of damsels in their bliss and distress in a clarion vibrato often likened to Iris Dement.
Jay Brown, of The Appalucians, Lazybirds, Shantavaani, and Swing Guitars, still finds some time to play with his other band, The Jay Brown One-Man-Band. Formed in 2007, The Jay Brown One-Man-Band includes Jay Brown on vocals, guitar, harmonica, and percussion. In 2010 the band added a new member, Jay Brown, on piano. An American roots musician, Jay has hundreds of classic songs in his repertoire, as well as another hundred or so originals. Jay can often be found playing in pubs around Asheville, NC but he has also studied and performed music across the far reaches of the world, including New Orleans, California, India, Ghana, Peru, and Swannanoa.
Michael McNevin is a San Francisco Bay Area native, and started his career with a six-month stint in New York City, cutting his troubadour teeth in the subways and streets of Greenwich Village. Now a veteran of the folk scene, Michael has logged close to 20 years worth of concerts across the U.S., and he's been a main stager at some of the bigger music festivals around, including the Strawberry, Kerrville, High Sierra, and Philadelphia music festivals. He's been billed in clubs and halls with the likes of Johnny Cash, Shawn Colvin, Donovan, Richie Havens, Christine Lavin, Utah Phillips, and 100s of others on the songwriter circuit. He has a seasoned voice, accomplished steel string guitar work, and a vivid brand of storytelling. He is a past winner of the Kerrville New-folk award in Texas, a 6-time winner of the West Coast Songwriters Association "Song Of The Year" ('91, '92, '97, '98, '05, '09), and was chosen by Performing Songwriter Magazine as a Top 12 DIY Artist Of The Year".
Gwyneth Moreland is a singer songwriter with two albums to her name. In 2014, she released her album Ceilings, Floors, and Open Doors. The album was recorded live, captured in the moment, with minimal production, and her follow up was Cider, an exquisitely produced work highlighting her stunning voice and songwriting ability. On hand for Cider was a studio crew that included former Byrds member Gene Parsons, who plays and sings on some of the tracks. Also playing on the album is producer/musician David Hayes, a long-time Van Morrison bass player who has played on and produced his own albums and those of many other artists, including Parsons. Moreland is also a member of Foxglove, with her brother Morgan Daniel, and The Mendocino Quartet, with Gene Parsons, David Hayes, and Mendocino Countys Steven Bates. Together with husband Skyler Hinkle, they formed the Folk duo Marine Layer, and will be showcasing their musical, as well as familial relationships.
