Music in the Chapel: Tjärnblom

You're invited to enjoy the Scandinavian-string style music of Tjärnblom in the historic Lakewood Chapel on Sunday, April 7.

Swedish for "woodland lake flower," Tjärnblom features a beautiful blend of Nyckelharpa, Octave Mandolin, Harmonium and Cello. They play a repertoire of both old and new Swedish, Finnish and Minnesota music, and have appeared on Minnesota Public Radio's A Prairie Home Companion. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

Doors open early at 2 p.m. so you can take a self-guided tour of the Lakewood Memorial Chapel before the show (free tour brochures will be available).

The Lakewood Chapel -- one of our city's most beloved architectural treasures -- is an intimate setting that seats about 160 people. Because of its incredible beauty, it is a popular place for weddings, end-of-life services, music concerts, tours and other celebrations of beauty, art and remembrance.

Dedicated in 1910, the Lakewood Chapel was modeled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul by prominent Minneapolis architect Harry Wild Jones. Its 10-million piece mosaic interior, created by New York designer Charles Lamb, features a 40-foot high dome ringed with stained glass windows and 12 mosaic angels. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Chapel is one of the finest examples of Byzantine mosaic architecture in the country.
