Patmon Dance Project: Homescape

"Patmon Dance Project: Homescape" is a dreamy landscape of dancers that weaves in and out of the places we call home, and arrives in an America that must face either its dark reality or its own demise.
The work builds on the ideas of family and comfort and how the avalanche that is death, loss, and grief rocks the foundation to the core. What is left of us after we are gone? A collection of old trinkets left behind? Or is it something more? Maybe the lives we spent still echo in the spaces we once called home.
Maybe the words of our ancestors who fought for our American rights with dignity surge through us as we continue where they left off. Maybe when we begin to change our perspectives on our context of home, we can start to mend the lines that divide us.
Many of the shorter vignettes within "Patmon Dance Project: Homescape" touch on life, death, spirit, and morality. The questions I am left with are too many to include, but the ones that stand out follow.
What is home? How do we find the strength to keep on going after a parent dies when we are far away from home and those we love? As a woman of color, of mixed race, how does a sense of home and belonging relate to a longing for an inclusive racial identity? How do we as a country close the gap between our hopeful expectations of the American Dream and the harsh reality? What will it take to make people actually see the damage this country has caused? Once we are "woke" how do we make change?

Emerging Artists has always been about new works, new talents, new voices. That's never been more evident than now.
