Trans/forming Organizations: Building Better Practices for Trans Inclusion and Beyond

Friday, March 29, 2019

Bagels & Registration at 8:30, workshop 9:00-4:30
Lunch on your own (lots of options nearby)
Free parking & convenient bus line access
Registration fee includes all materials plus snacks

This is a follow-up session to the several Trans/forming Allyship trainings we've offered in Madison over the past year. Registration is open to people who have attended one of those previous trainings, or are registered for the one on March 16 (Register now! https://transallyshiptraining-jruuc.brownpapertickets.com/), or who already have substantial experience with trans community advocacy.

Trans/forming Allyship brought together several phenomenal cohorts of leaders in our community, from bank managers to body workers, housing coop members to congregational leaders, social workers to preschool teachers. Now we'll gather once again to build on our foundation of allyship skills, and turn our attention to our organizations. Together, we will:
- assess the policies, structures, and organizational culture that either support or restrict trans inclusion
- envision long-term possibilities for trans inclusion and gender justice
- map out concrete steps toward short- and medium-term goals that we can start working toward right now
- build community, share ideas and resources, and support one another in this work

Like last time, you can expect a lively combination of presentations, small- and large-group discussions, practical exercises and collaborative problem-solving. We'll introduce some new ideas and tools as well as draw on the wisdom and experience in the group.

*Important accessibility note: For the health and safety of presenters and participants, please come fragrance-free. If you have an accessibility need (such as screen reader-friendly handouts, etc.), please let us know so that we can plan ahead to accommodate everybody.*

We have NOT applied for CEUs for this training due to low demand for them. But if it would help you to have CEUs, let us know by early February and we'll still have time to make it happen.

The sliding-scale registration fee operates on the "honor system," to keep the workshop accessible to people with a range of means. We trust you to select the price category that's fair for you. NOTAFL (No One Turned Away For Lack of Funds), so if the low end of the scale is a big stretch for you, please be in touch and we'll work something out.

This training is offered with the generous support of the UW Credit Union and the Wisconsin Trans Health Coalition

About the trainer: Davey Shlasko is an educator, author and consultant who has been working on transgender community issues since 2000. Davey's recent and ongoing work includes consulting with numerous K-12 schools, colleges, and human service providers to improve trans inclusion; co-designing and leading a community-based study group focused on racial justice organizing in predominantly white, rural areas; co-designing and leading a community-based cross-class dialogue circle with ACT for Social Justice; and co-editing Readings for Diversity and Social Justice, 4th edition. Davey teaches as a lecturer at UW Madison in Gender & Women's Studies and at the Smith College School for Social Work, teaching critical theory and transgender studies to MSW students. Davey is the author of Trans Allyship Workbook: Building Skills to Support Trans People in Our Lives.
