Dr. Steven Hokett, Systemic Interrelationships in the Management of the Periodontal Patient in 2019
Dentists need to know more about systemic diseases and physicians need to increase their knowledge of oral diseases. Many factors that place patients at high risk for periodontitis may also place them at high risk for systemic illness (e.g. smoking). 10 to 15% of US adults have severe periodontal disease; the same is true for the rest of the world. Factors other than chance or poor dental habits predispose people to periodontal disease. This lecture will explore the systemic conditions as risk factors for periodontal disease: diabetes mellitus, medications, hormonal, immunosuppression, environmental (smoking, stress), hematological disorders and genetic disorders.

Hokett is a 1983 graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center Dental School at San Antonio where he received a DDS. degree.  He received a certificate in Periodontics at Fort Gordon, Georgia in conjunction with the Medical College of Georgia in 1991.
