Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Elephant Seals: A Presentation by Friends of the Elephant Seals at the Piedras Blancas Rookery
Join the Friends of the Elephant Seals for a lecture and viewing at the Piedras Blancas Rookery.
The northern elephant seal, Mirounga angustirostris, is an extraordinary marine mammal. It spends eight to ten months a year in the open ocean, diving 1000 to 5800 feet deep for periods of fifteen minutes to two hours, and migrating thousands of miles, twice a year, to its land-based rookery for birthing, breeding, molting, and rest. Piedras Blancas is a great place to view these remarkable creatures during their time onshore.
Your visit will start with an indoor presentation. A docent with "Friends of the Elephant Seals" non-profit organization will discuss the habits of the seals, their physical and dietary needs, changes in the size of their population over the years, and explain some of their mating rituals. You will then go outside to get up close with the elephant seals. This visit will occur during the height of the seals birthing season, and you will have lots of opportunity to ask a trained expert about how the males and females interact with one another, and about how the females raise their pups.
Perhaps you will want to make a day of it by having lunch on the North Coast and then by visiting another lookout point where you can see more seals or a stop at the Lighthouse.
