SATE presents CLASSIC MYSTERY GAME, a parody. Or perhaps it would be better described as a spoof. Maybe a send-up. Possibly a take-off. A lampoon, perchance. Feasibly, a caricature. And to those who are offended, it's just a joke. Parody can be used to comment on the exact work it's exaggerating, or it can be used as a weapon to target something else...such as the failure of capitalism in a climate-changing world, as the case may be. But sometimes a parody is no more than a miserable buffoonery, which can only please the populace. The use of parody in human culture is ritualistic. As soon as a hit pop song has come out, Weird Al has a parody version. Once a YouTube video goes viral, the auto-tuned parody has just as many likes, if not more. Cult Classic movies are constantly turned into plays for us weird theatre kids to exaggerate the style and insert hilarious anachronisms. We've come to expect it.

So here we are, once more, to perform yet another ritual. The brain child of Katy Keating and Michael Cassidy Flynn, Classic Mystery Game investigates Western society in 2019 through the lens of the hilarious 1985 movie, CLUE...which in turn was investigating Western society in 1985 through the lens of McCarthyism. Perhaps by distilling our world through so many layers of comedy, as the ritual calls for, we'll discover a bit of Truth - even if it's merely a smile at the end of a funny play.

SATE presents Classic Mystery Game, January 30-February 16 (Wednesdays-Saturdays) at 8:00pm, at The Chapel, 6238 Alexander Drive, St. Louis, MO 63105.

The performing ensemble includes: Will Bonfiglio, Paul Cereghino, Maggie Conroy, Michael Cassidy Flynn, Bess Moynihan, Carl Overly, Jr., Reginald Pierre, Ellie Schwetye, Kristen Strom, Rachel Tibbetts, Marcy Wiegert.

CLASSIC MYSTERY GAME is directed by Katy Keating. The production stage manager is Summer Baer. Lighting design by Ben Lewis and costumes by Liz Henning, with set design by Bess Moynihan and sound design by Ellie Schwetye.
