Stephan Nance - Look at the Harlequins! Release Concert & Audubon Benefit with Karyn Ann
**Ticket sales for this event will go directly to Portland Audubon to support their conservation efforts**
Join singer-songwriter Stephan Nance at Classic Pianos (next to Aladdin Theater) for the release of their latest, birdiest record, Look at the Harlequins! Seldom on a winter's night in Oregon can a birder rack up a checklist of more than thirty species in a single hour. But that's exactly what listeners have in store for them on January 18th.
Stephan's music has drawn comparisons to basically any singer who ever played a piano Regina Spektor, Ben Folds, Tori Amos but occupies a niche of its own, one where the word bird just doesn't cut it. In Overwintered, a suspenseful song inspired by visits to Klamath Falls, Stephan alludes to the wick-a call of a Northern Flicker. Another new track, Reverse Nature Shock, describes the return of an itinerant Song Sparrow after touring Japan, with references to hashibuto and hashiboso garasu (Large-billed and Carrion Crows).
Attendees will be encouraged to keep track of the birds on a checklist in the program.
Stephan will be joined by Karyn Ann:
With a voice known to "beguile the most inattentive bar-goer", Karyn Ann has gained notoriety as a skilled singer and songwriter, drawing comparisons to 60s troubadours like Bonnie Raitt and Carole King and modern artists like Adele and Brandi Carlile. She tours nationally, with notable appearances at the legendary Bitter End in NYC, and the Women's Redrock Music Festival alongside Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls.
Karyn Ann's second studio album Be Loud is an eclectic cultivation of the calm, brooding, and compassionate personas she introduced in her 2015 debut album Into the Depths, only this time around it's bursting with color from rock anthem waves to funky dance riffs to more tender and delicate moments, Be Loud paints a world arguing with itself and the observer caught in between.
