Scandinavian Holiday Concert
Scandinavian music is enchanting for its unusual rhythms and its ethereal harmonies, and the perfect music to usher in one of the darkest nights of the year. Join with us as Grammy Award nominee, Andrea Hoag, one of Americas finest Swedish fiddlers is joined by Melissa Running on the Swedish keyed-fiddle, the nykelharpa playing music from Swedish, English and other traditions to celebrate the holiday season on Sunday, December 23 at 4pm. Located in the lovely intimate atmosphere of St. Peters Lutheran Church, its the perfect way to usher in the holiday season.
A Grammy nominee, Maryland State Master Artist, recipient of two Maryland Individual Artist Awards, and winner of Washington Area Music Awards Best Traditional Folk Instrumentalist, Andrea Hoag is a legendary performer of Swedish folk fiddling in America. Her music has been featured on NPRs All Things Considered and Performance Today, at the Kennedy Center and Library of Congress, and at numerous venues around the U.S. and in Sweden. With a particular interest in in-depth musical conversations, Andrea has collaborated across genres with many respected artists, from pianist Jacqueline Schwab to blues master Phil Wiggins.
For more than 40 years, Andrea Hoag has devoted herself to traditional fiddling. Immersing herself first in southern Appalachian music and culture in the early 1980s, she was overtaken by a love of Swedish fiddlings unusual scales and rhythms. Awarded a fellowship from the Skandia Music Foundation, she studied at Swedens respected Malungs Folkhögskola, earning the certificate in Folk Violin Pedagogy in 1984. She also studied in-depth with elder tradition-bearers Pekkos Gustaf and Nils Agenmark, masters of the complex, demanding Bingsjö fiddling dialect. Andrea has taught Swedish music in many settings, including The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Weeks, Swannanoa Gathering, and Värmland Folk Music School.
Melissa Running discovered traditional dance in college and never looked back; today she calls, writes dances and plays for dances on eloquently accented piano and on the traditional Swedish nykelharpa, or keyed fiddle. Her style is lovely and melodic, flowing yet rhythmic, and enchants both dancers and audiences alike.
Melissa and Andrea are both composers of note and will share their own and other new compositions in traditional styles, as well as many tunes from the depths of time and winter.
Scandinavian music is the perfect music of winter, the harmonies are spellbinding, and the rhythms of the music have a deep pulse which drives some of the most beautiful dancing imaginable. Among the repertoire will be the traditional 3/4-time polska (in its many variants), which entrances with rhythms that feel new yet natural. Catchy schottisches, lively polkas, and luscious waltzes round out the Scandinavian offerings. English country dance music from bouncy jigs to elegant 3/2-meter hornpipes add to the richness of the program.
The concert will be held in St Peters Lutheran Church, on the corner of King and High Streets in Shepherdstown, WV on Saturday, December 23 at 8:00 PM.
