The Blender, a collection of eight short plays by award-winning playwright, Dylan Guerra, will be presented as part of the Summer Shares at La MaMa program at the La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York City. The limited engagement begins July 30th and ends August 4th.

The Blender has been produced throughout the Miami area and this will be its first run in New York.  The La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club is recognized as one of the most acclaimed off-off-broadway theaters in New York City.

Guerra, who is co-directing the performance with Tom Gelo and Hannah Benitez. commented, "We are very excited to present this production in New York, the world's epicenter for theatre.  The Blender has been well received by critics and audiences alike throughout all venues to date, and I am very anxious to see the reaction of New York theatre goers.  I am fortunate to have this group of incredibly talented student actors, hailing from B.F.A programs at Carnegie Mellon University, Boston University, Florida State University and Southern Methodist University." The cast includes Ryan Avalos, Leslie Ballart, Tyler Crim, Danniel Gerchakov, Jeremy Gettis, Dylan Guerra, Stephanie Machado and Caitlin Rodstein.

Robert Battle, the Artistic Director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, said of Guerra, "Dylan is an exciting and unique new voice in the theatre.  This set of plays shows his immense talent and versatility, and should prove to be the starting point of an incredible career."  Guerra is a Silver Knight nominee for his work in creating powerful student voices in the professional artistic world. He has been described as "blurring the line between fantasy and reality" (Buster Spills, Broadwayworld.com/Dallas).

The Blender breaks away from typical theatrical conventions as all actors are on stage throughout all eight plays and often provide sound effects during the shorts. Instead of blackouts, the production deploys cohesive transitions to the next play, each segue is set to contemporary music.  All eight student-actors play multiple roles in the production, ranging from an illiterate, overbearing sister, to a German doctor who believes he has found the cure to a killer plant outbreak.

The Blender opens with "How To", a fast comedy on familial structure in the 1950's and segues into "Brilliant Children", a play about child actors who have trouble evolving from their past roles. "Plants!" is a thriller-comedy about people turning into plants and presents a new slant on science fiction. "Kill Your Darlings" is an existential-crisis comedy that involves a playwright having to tell the characters from his beloved play that he must kill one of them off.  Guerra's award winning play, "Apple Tree", a re-telling of the classic Adam and Eve story, is also included in this performance.  Other plays included in The Blender are "Python", a play about the last days of a marijuana-dealing family and their python on the back porch; "The Six", a one man show that questions happiness; and Underworld, a mafia farce on the water.
