Bird Fest
--We're anticipating an in-person event at the Burien Community Center, but are awaiting rental confirmation in 2022. The outdoor counts will occur at Dottie Harper Park, whether we need to change locations or go virtual again. If we can host indoors, vaccine verification or a negative Covid-19 test will be required for 12 years and older to participate in activities insides.--

Hourly 30-min bird counts with basic bird IDs for ages:
10:30 am, 11:30 am, 12:00 pm

Do you want to learn what birds are in your backyard? Do you want to help scientists take a snapshot of their populations? You can do both Saturday, Feb 19 at Bird Fest from 10 am to 1 pm at the Burien Community Center. This free event offers families, friends and neighbors a chance to learn about their local birds and plants and to participate in the annual Great Backyard Bird Count.

Stay tuned for info on partners and indoor activities!

We plan to have bird counts, presentations, and partner booths and activities for all ages. Outdoors, local naturalists will share identification tips and lead 30-min counts at the adjacent Dottie Harper Park. Indoor activities will include family-friendly activities of identification games, observing bird skins and mounts, dissecting owl pellets, and interactions with local organizations and community groups.

The Environmental Science Center has coordinated Bird Fest with sponsorship from the City of Burien to spread awareness on watershed health through creating native habitat for birds. It promotes the Great Backyard Bird Count, a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society with partner Bird Studies Canada and is made possible in part by founding sponsor Wild Birds Unlimited.

In 1998, this was the first online community-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real-time. In 2021, 300,000+ worldwide bird worldwide bird watchers helped in the four-day count to create an annual snapshot of the distribution and abundance of 6,436 species of birds. Help us increase those numbers!

If you help count at the event on Feb. 19, those species will be entered into eBird, which is the global online program collecting bird observations every day of the year. If you cannot attend, count that weekend or any other time and submit your findings on eBird. Just 15 minutes can make a big difference for birds! Find out more at http://gbbc.birdcount.org/
