Chris Pureka's sophomore release, Dryland plays like the way she enters a room: with low, deliberate airs, quietly demanding respect. One stark, solo acoustic guitar builds into layered swan songs and raspy serenades that resonate with unassuming depth and candor.
Dryland is the highly-anticipated follow-up to Pureka's 2004 debut, Driving North, for which the rising newcomer has landed praise from publications like Performing Songwriter, Time Out New York, Nashville City Paper and many others. Comparisons flow easily: some recognize the poetry and grit of a young Bruce Springsteen or a troubled Ryan Adams. Others see Nashville shining on the horizon for this indie-acoustic songstress whose simple, yet heartfelt and vulnerable delivery often resembles shades of female greats like Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch or Mary Gauthier. Whatever the reference point, one thing remains certain: on her newest release, Chris Pureka has taken the unfettered, heart-on-your-sleeve approach she is known for and has delved even deeper into her calling to deliver a newly promising and original collection of songs. The progression is natural, if not subtle; and the results are impressive.
ANNIE LYNCH AND THE BEEKEEPERS create and perform honest music, influenced and inspired by love and the ever-changing incomprehensible whole wide world. This is a band of friends, music-makers, emotion-feelers, explorers, wanderers, wonderers, creators, lovers, fighters, and hopefully, inspirers.
RUSTY BELLE hails from that town of abounding academia, Amherst, Massachusetts; where the faces are young and the rent is cheap. Here they have concocted their strange and intoxicating musical brew, nurtured their wild and hairy live show, and built a following of loyal, almost devout, fans and friends. Matt and Kate Lorenz sing together with the intuitive harmony of siblings. Together with the rest of the band they produced new material that none of them had anticipated. It smelled like folk, acoustic and rooted, but leaned a little more towards tomorrow than yesterday. They swagger between raw blues, tiny tangos, country waltzes and backyard symphonies. Sometimes a walk with the Roma, a twisted tale in metered time, or a yell-along-after-dinner drunken opera. A dance band that tries to tie your shoes together. The music is littered with dented paint cans, smashed up trashcan lids, old hacksaw blades, and broken glass. Like junkyard songbirds, they sing sweet through all the rubbage.
