The Vent - 6/16/13

JOSH HEALEY
"Joshie and the Chocolate Factory"

Raised by his loving, sweet, and unabashedly Communist grandmother, Josh's childhood was a little different than most kids. For bedtime stories, Comrade Granny (as she liked to be called) read Josh soothing passages from Mao's Little Red Book. And every day after school, she took Josh to marches and demonstrations. Until one day, Comrade Granny took 10-year-old Josh to a strike outside a candy factory, and he had to decide who he was going to stand in solidarity with: his grandmother or Willy Wonka?

PIDGE MEADE
"I Was a Teenage Liberal: How 70s Television Raised My Consciousness,  Unleashed My Feminism, and Pissed Off My Dad"

1985, small-town southern Illinois. In one corner, a rock-ribbed hard-line Republican patriarch used to being obeyed. In the other, his previously-compliant daughter who is suddenly talking like a pinko agitator when her high school teachers threaten to strike. What happens when the irresistible force of a girl raised on "All in the Family" and "Maude" meets the immovable object of a macho men's gymnastics coach and WWII veteran?

JOSHUA CEREGHINO
'Viveza Criolla"

Josh learns how to survive like a local in Buenos Aires, with the help of an opportunistic friend and a old American car. But how far can he take it before he's found out? And how do you say " Catch Me If You Can" in Argentine Spanish?

JAKE ARKY
"Blackie's Mom"

It takes a moo-moo wearing, screwdriver-wielding pet owner threatening to stab Jake's face off to reignite Jake's passion for his job at the Humane Society of New York. Thank you Blackie's Mom!

RACHEL GILL
"Lovefest"

Emboldened by a new spirit of adventure, Rachel was drawn to the upcoming parade on Market Street featuring floats carrying DJs spinning dance music. But she was intimidated by the throng in downtown San Francisco that was expected to exceed 100,000 people. A few new friends were needed to help ease the way. How hard could it be to make a few new friends? A pot brownie sold to her by a stranger, a homeless woman who provides guidance, and the J Church streetcar all play significant roles in this modern-day morality tale that leaves Rachel questioning if adventure is for her. Or anybody.
