Washington Women in Jazz Festival

Four female acoustic and electronic musicians are collaborating for an improvised showcase in NE DC. Inspired by DC's own Washington Women in Jazz Festival, Seattle's first Women in Jazz Festival was held this April. Among the first performers were Kate Olson and Naomi Siegel, collectively "The Syrinx Effect"

The Syrinx Effect is Kate Olson and Naomi Siegel, a duo that plays contemporary, improvised chamber music with electronics. Naomi plays trombone with guitar pedals and Kate plays soprano saxophone with laptop and other toys.

They make music that is authentic and expressive, employing everything from simple folk melodies to abstract, ambient noise. Their east coast tour is in support of their first studio EP, "gnarly & sweet." Kate and Naomi have collaborated with many musicians such as Wayne Horvitz, Rene Hart, Allison Miller, Jason Levis (Berlin-based drummer and composer), and Daniel Barry.

Joining the Syrinx Effect will be alto saxophonist Sarah Hughes (Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra), and pianist Amy K Bormet (Striking, founder of WWJF). This unique event is co-sponsored by Union Arts and Manufacturing, DC's newest communal arts space, a creative meeting place for artists of all types.
