YURI HERRERA - The transmigration of bodies
The Instituto Cervantes in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico, National Museum of Mexican Art, University of Chicago, Loyola University, DePaul University, University of Illinois in Chicago, Contratiempo and Hoy Newspaper present a series of six panel discussions from May through December.
The internationally acclaimed Mexican writers, Yuri Herrera, Álvaro Enrigue, Margo Glantz, Elena Poniatowska, Cristina Rivera Garza and Sabina Berman will all be featured in the premiere of this annual series in 2013.
The bilingual panel discussions will pair each Mexican writer with a local Chicago scholar or journalist to explore the social, political and philosophical themes raised in their books.  They will also investigate how Mexican and American literature, history and culture differ, inform and influence one another.
Yuri Herrera's first novel Trabajos del reino won the Premio Binacional de Novela Joven 2003 and received the "Otras voces, otros ámbitos" prize for the best novel published in Spain in 2008.  It has been translated in English, French, German, Dutch and Italian.  His second novel, Señales que precederán al fin del mundo was a finalist of the Rómulo Gallegos Prize.  His latest book is La transmigración de los cuerpos, published in Spain by Periférica.  He has taught literary theory, creative writing and Latin American literature at the Universidad Iberoamericana and at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. He is currently a Mellon Fellow at Tulane University, where he has been studying discourses surrounding the "war on drugs" in Mexico, about which he has lectured and published several articles.
