In the 1600's, the Netherlands brought under its control a vast region in south Asia made up of a series of large islands over 3000 miles in length.
It was the richest of all European colonies, a great source of spices, coffee, tea, rubber, tin and copper, later becoming a leading producer of petroleum. Finally after over 300 years the area won independence from the Dutch, but not without loss of many lives and as an indirect result of Japanese occupation during WWII.
Today that huge area is the nation of Indonesia, the fourth most populous nation in the world. With all its resources, it ranks a mere 119th in world per-capita GDP, behind such places as Mongolia, Albania and Paraguay.
It has proven to be difficult to manage and difficult to reach its economic potential. Predominantly an Islamic nation, Indonesia is visually stunning in both natural beauty and historical artifacts. Two hours can only touch the surface of the physical, historical and cultural features of this colossus, but we will try to get to as much of it as we can.
Professor John McKinstry of sociology and Asian Studies at Cal Poly 1968-2014. Recipient of three teaching Fulbright Awards. Staff of universities in Tokyo, Fukuoka, Harbin and Sofia, Bulgaria. Author and co-author of several books about Asian societies.
