"The Boy Who Lived" by Mike McQuade
"The Boy Who Lived" is an original play written by Mike McQuade and follows the life of Sam Hawthorne, a teenage boy who has spent his childhood dealing with depression and bullying. He takes solace from this in his best friend, Josh, and in the magical world of Harry Potter. In those books, he finds friends, magic, and a place to belong, like so many of us did. In the days after Sam's untimely death, Josh and others close to him recall Sam's life and everything he went through. Told through a combination of interviews, memories, and shadows, "The Boy Who Lived" is a touching piece about mental illness, magic, and love in all its forms. It is the second piece in the Chaotic Good Collective's series on mental health and suicide. It is directed by Jamie Stapel, designed by Antoinette Fasino, and features the theatrical talents of Daniel Rutz, David Acosta, Christine "Chandy" Bennett, and Jeremy Doyle.
