"Das Rheingold" is an opera written by Richard Wagner, full of magnificent music, exquisite arias, mythical grandeur, and the dumbest plot every imagined by a composer. Now, Josh Faigen has removed all the superfluous brilliant stuff and adapted the plot for American audiences. And, because there are fourteen roles, we will need help from the audience! Gods, goddesses, giants, magical river maidens, niebelungen (dwarves), magic helmets, gardens of eternal youth, and gold lots and lots of gold. Neediness can be seductive. Being needed can be lethal. In Hailey Kleins, "KillJoy," one character sends out her siren song, or is it a call to her muse? The other character is a man caught in all too familiar quicksand. The play dips its toes into the murky waters of an addiction cycle being played out. This story gently lays down its message, as if the audience just discovered itself musing over past as prelude. In a contemplative moment an insight might occur that offers change. How do we cut the chords of habit when they are rooted in the soft cocoon of intimacy? Who will survive? At what price?
