Carlo Aonzo & Rene Izquierdo with Seattle Mandolin Orchestra
The Seattle Mandolin Orchestra announces a concert appearance June 1 by classical mandolin/guitar duo Carlo Aonzo and René Izquierdo, performing selections from their recent CD, PAGANINI. The orchestra will open the concert with a selection of works by Latin American composers.
The duo's concert program will feature works by Genoese composer Niccolò Paganini (1782-1840). Although best known as a violinist, Paganini began his studies on mandolin and was a virtuoso guitarist who enjoyed using this combination of instruments in intimate concerts--an experience that Carlo and René will seek to recreate.
Carlo Aonzo, from Savona, Italy, founded and conducts the Italian Mandolin Academy Orchestra and regularly records, performs and tours all over the world. In 2006, he set up the International Mandolin Academy to promote the Italian mandolin tradition, and he teaches several music courses in Europe and the USA, including his annual Manhattan Mandolin Workshop in New York.
Born in Cuba, René Izquierdo is a graduate of Yale University School of Music and a professor of classical guitar at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. As a concert artist, René has performed throughout the world, receiving wide critical acclaim for his performances. He is recognized as one of America's classical guitar virtuosos, having won numerous awards and competitions and shared the stage with prestigious musicians.
Joining Carlo and René will be the Seattle Mandolin Orchestra under the direction of Joseph Pollard White. They will perform classical and folk selections from countries throughout Latin America, including Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Uruguay, in styles including tango, choro, bossa nova and more.
Since taking the podium for the Seattle Mandolin Orchestra in 2010, Joseph Pollard White has worked with the group to reinterpret the music of Mozart, Mendelssohn, Haydn, Brahms, Handel and other composers, exploring the mandolin as a legitimate voice in classical music as well as other styles. A native of New York, completed the Doctor of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Washington, where he was a student of Robert Feist. He also holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and the Indiana University School of Music. Dr. White has taught at Northern Kentucky University, Christopher Newport University and Pacific Lutheran University. He has worked with the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, Seattle Chamber Players and Northwest Mahler Festival and served as Music Director of the Rainier Symphony and Seattle Civic Light Opera.
Founded in 1968, the Seattle Mandolin Orchestra is dedicated to revitalizing America's mandolin ensemble tradition. Featuring the entire mandolin family of instruments, including mandolin, mandola, mandocello and mandobass, as well as guitar, the group performs throughout the Seattle area. The Orchestra's CD, COLORATURA, will be for sale at the concert. It includes classical selections, Italian favorites and Renaissance art songs, featuring the captivating vocals of soprano soloist Julie Finch.
