Rhythmix Island Arts is proud to present Marimba to Minyo, featuring Taiko fusion plus Japanese Folks Songs, Festival Dances and much more!

Formed in 2006, Ensohza Minyoshu is a Japanese folk performance ensemble based in the San Francisco Bay Area, performing songs and dances that evoke the festival spirit of Japan and the character of its diverse rural communities with lively vocals, bamboo flutes, shamisen and taiko drums

Maze Daiko's name is derived from the Japanese word for 'mix" (Mazeru) and taiko (daiko) is the Japanese word for "drum." Maze blends global inspiration with a wide range of percussion to create contemporary interpretations for taiko. Maze Daiko performs original compositions influenced world cultures including Japan, Africa and Cuba with the physical elegance and vibrant sounds of taiko.

The members of Maze Daiko have toured throughout the U.S. and Japan -- Janet Koike, Kathryn Cabunoc, Tina Blaine, Carolyn West, and special guest, Yumi Ishihara all have years of collective experience in other taiko or musical groups including San Jose Taiko, San Francisco Taiko Dojo, Emeryville Taiko, D'CuCKOO and the Rhythmix Ensemble. Ensohza features Takashi Sugimoto on vocals, Karl Young playing Shakuhachi and fue, Clare "Jiro" Hess on Shamisen and fue, Nina Sazevich on Taiko and dance along with dancers Sue Hirabayashi, Jennifer Lau, Laura Rawson, and Irma Spars.

This concert made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, Walter and Elise Haas Fund, and the Zellerbach Family Foundation
