Fail Again, Fail Better: A Conversation on Artistic Failure

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:
Go on social media, and every day you'll see artists winning awards, receiving big grants, and promoting their latest work. In a culture where likes, comments, and retweets are currency, good news spreads fast, but we rarely hear of the bad, the dark days when an artists project fails, their practice bottoms out, or their life falls apart. In this conversation, Eastern Washington artists Joe Hedges, Roin Morigeau, and Sharma Shields, and arts administrator Ginger Ewing share strategies for negotiating emotional, physical, and structural barriers and maintaining an art practice during challenging times. Moderated by Artist Trust Spokane Program Coordinator Anne-Claire Mitchell.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
ROIN MORIGEAU (b. Oct 24, 1984) is an interdisciplinary artist experiencing and investigating pain through mixed-media such as drawing, painting, poetry, photography and sculpture. Living with physical limitations and daily chronic pain from a spinal injury, Roin centers their art practice as a form of protest and healing. Producing minimal yet powerful abstract images, Roin explores the feeling of in-betweenness they experience as a queer, disabled, gender non-binary person raised in a bi-cultural home (anglo-European and Flathead Salish). Roin was chosen as a 2017 cohort member of the Window Dressing Creative Enterprise Program, has shown in numerous shows and exhibitions regionally including Emerge, The Chase Gallery, The Terrain Gallery, is a member of the Spokane-based, PORTAL Collective and a 2018-2019 sponsored member of Saranac Art Projects. Roin maintains a daily studio practice and lives with their matriarchs in occupied Spokane territories.
JOE HEDGES is an intermedia artist living and working in Pullman, Washington, United States. Hedges works across painting, web, video, installation etc. employing the visual language of the scientific experiment and the archive while exploring the effects of digital technologies on human experience. Hedges' work simultaneously utilizes and challenges the history and traditions of oil painting through melding vocabularies and media. Hedges has exhibited nationally and internationally.
As an educator Hedges works at Washington State University coordinating the painting program as Assistant Professor of Painting/Intermedia, looking at painting as a form of media technology and exploring ways painting can interface with other disciplines and media. As a curator Hedges has works with experimental curatorial collective Near*By (nearbycollective.org) to stage ephemeral and interdisciplinary exhibitions that connect artists and pluralistic audiences. He has completed large-scale public art projects in Ohio, Kentucky and Washington State.
Hedges holds a BFA with an emphasis in painting from Northern Kentucky University and an MFA from the University of Cincinnatis DAAP College of Design, Architecture, Art & Planning.
GINGER EWING has spent the better part of a decade as an arts educator, advocate and organizer in Spokane. She is the founder of Window Dressing, a storefront gallery program that fills vacant buildings and disused spaces with art installations and creative business, and is a Co-founder of Terrain. Prior to this, Ginger was a museum educator at the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture. Ginger sits on the Washington State Arts Commission, The Spokane Arts Commission, is an ambassador for Artist Trust.
Sharma Shields is the author of a short story collection, Favorite Monster, and a novel, The Sasquatch Hunters Almanac. Henry Holt will publish her next novel, The Cassandra, in early 2019. Sharmas writing has appeared in Catapult, Electric Lit, Slice, The New York Times, Kenyon Review, Iowa Review, Fugue, and elsewhere and has garnered such awards as the Washington State Book Award, the Autumn House Fiction Prize, the Tim McGinnis Award for Humor, a Grant for Artist Projects from Artist Trust, and the A.B. Guthrie Award for Outstanding Prose. She received her B.A. in English Literature from the University of Washington (2000) and her MFA from the University of Montana (2004). Sharma has worked in independent bookstores and public libraries throughout Washington State and now lives in Spokane with her husband and two young children. A Public Services Specialist at the North Spokane and Spokane Valley Libraries, she is a board member for the Friends of the Spokane County Library District and also serves on the programming committee for Spokane's Spark Central.
